To kick off this Q & A, I feel I must address the "elephant in the room", that being the nudity (something I was definitely not expecting to see, so it definitely shocked me) - Was that one particular moment of full frontal nudity always included in the script or was it more of a spontaneous idea that came later during production?

Izzy Lee

It was included from day one. It was completely inspired by Tristan, who's absolutely fearless. We were on a previous set several months before, and she told me about her secret trick, and I wrote the film entirely around what she could do. The best part of showing this film is witnessing audience reaction. The film doesn't exploit her character, Alice Marsh. She's completely in charge of everything she does and everyone knows it. The nudity is a part of her being.

What was Tristan Risk's initial reaction upon that idea, was she cool with it or did she have any reservations or questions regarding it?

IL

Nope. She hopped off the set delighted and very happy. The crew were a bit more disturbed. Like I said, this film exists because of her and her fearlessness. Tristan doesn't do anything she doesn't want to do. She's inspiring as hell.

The town of Innsmouth in your film, is there in fact a connection to the location in H.P. Lovecraft's story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", and are you a fan of H.P. Lovecraft?

IL

Yes, although it's a loose connection. I've flipped the gender roles from male to female, and in the case of Olmstead, she's a detective, not a student. Yes, I'm a Lovecraft fan.

DCP

What has been the response to the film thus far from audiences?

IL

It ranges from love to bewilderment, but people are usually very, very encouraging.

DCP

What was a challenge you were not expecting to face upon shooting Innsmouth?

IL

How long the FX took to apply on set.

DCP

Which is the easiest or less challenging for you, writing a script or shooting a film?

IL

Writing is easier, but shooting is more fulfilling.

DCP

If a location called Innsmouth really did exist, would you visit?

IL

I would rule that fucking town.
