Now, I feel I should forewarn you before you read on. I have never read the book that this film is adapted from. So contrasts and comparisons should not be expected. However I will speak of the film, and share my thoughts and feelings about it. I must be honest, films adapted from Young Adult novels are particularly not my cup of tea. For some ungodly reason I can never really get into them whenever I see a Y.A. film adaptation. However, life always tends to present you with an opportunity to see things in a different perspective. So this is my experience...
You wake up in a strange people, surrounded by people you don't know, with no memory of how you got there. Not just that but the place you wake up in happens to be an enormous maze that constantly moves and shifts. This is what happens in this film. You are there with the character of Thomas, played by young actor Dylan O'Brien, whom you may recognize from the comedy "Internship" starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, you share in the things he goes through; the confusion, the urgency to get out of the place he's in and find out what happened and find out the truth about why that is happening to him. As he is there in the maze he meets other interesting characters (supported by a group of young talent) such as Gally, played by Will Poulter, whom you also may recognize from the twisted hilarious comedy "We're The Millers" starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis.
I won't go into detail of the story because I feel it was incredibly well rendered and crafted, and not to mention there are some fantastically surprising twists and reveals that it would take away from the story, as well as the movie, to throw out Spoilers. However I will say, for this being his first time directing a full length feature after doing 3 short films, Wes Ball did impress me! I will tell you that I stand corrected and I am very glad that not only did my perspective change, but I also enjoyed this movie! It's exciting, it literally keeps you sitting forward, and it’s got some awesome nail-biting suspenseful moments and a mysterious story that only shows you a glimpse to a bigger picture that is yet to come with its upcoming sequel!
