I'm beginning to suspect that I'm the only person I knew who wasn't sexually abused growing up. Does that seem weird to anyone else? That everyone else I seem to know has, and that every day that I open up my inbox and newsfeed, that I see some horrible story. Most of these children are victims of abuse from people close to them, which makes it even more horrendous. It gets me to wondering if this is something that has always been there and rampant, or else if because of social media these days and our contemporary technology that has made it easier to find people who abuse children and share stories back and forth. It's a chicken or the egg type debate, though I have a feeling that this has been going on at this level long before the Internet.
I have always had a mild interest in incest. Not in the sexual sense, but in more a detached, scholastic way, as one would read up on serial killers out of some kind of morbid curiosity. Being an only child, and one who had a fairly uneventful upbringing, save for bullying at school, my home life was fine. Hearing about these stories was a look into a very twisted window of a place I was unfamiliar with. For someone who has never had to endure that, it's a very surreal experience to be hearing about all the time. I mean ALL. THE. TIME. I cannot begin to even fathom who has actually lived through it goes through a day without being triggered again, and again, and again.
Last spring, I shot a film with Eli Ganster about a man obessesed with his long dead sister from childhood and what she would be like as an adult. It goes beyond obsession and drives him to madness, but it got me on a little research jag. As with any research jag online with me, I found myself falling through the rabbit hole of clickbait and sensationalized account until I wound up going back and forth between articles from VICE and Buzzfeed. I'm not sure where it caught my eye, but there was a set of statistics posted by PornHub regarding United States preferences and porn consumption. This data went even further and illustrated the places where in the States these preferences lay. I was highly amused to see that in some of the most 'homophobic' states consumed the most homosexual erotica, which, I'm going to go out on a limb here, is reflective of those state's nasty habit of being contradictory... I daresay that some politicians fall into the 'methinks he doth protest too much' realm, but I digress.
What really interested me, in this research, was that there was quite a bit of incest porn. Mostly brother/sister stuff but also step sibling porn and daddy/daughter porn and mommy/son porn. While I am all for consenting adults doing whatever they wanted to explore together, provided it was all consensual, it made me curious about this thing that people have begun to fetishize. While I am an only child, I frequently joke that my mother learned her lesson after me. While I can see the abstract idea behind being attracted to a step-sibling, I can't really picture seeing people being attracted to their siblings. In fact, most people I know seem to regard their siblings as people they met in a genetic lottery, and share very little other than a basic DNA sequence. I'd also imagine that if you grew up with an annoying older sister or a bratty younger brother, the last thing you'd want to do is canoodle with them, but then I went and watch Blue Lagoon and began to suspect that proximity can play a key role in that...
However, much like the whole skipping the childhood abuse thing, I also missed out on the mindset behind a lot of angry Americans who are quick to blame others for their woes. There was a large number of Trump-supporting States that had the highest percentage of 'family role-play porn'. Stats taken between October 2014 and January 2015 reveal that Utah had the highest spike (765%), followed by Michigan (698%), Alaska (524%) and Arkansas (452%). These 'red' states that voted in Trump (with the flip in favour of the Republican party, in the case of Michigan) and I feel like that might be something to consider. These are just five of the States where incest porn is climbing the quickest in popularity. The family fuck factor might be something that resonates with some of the Trump supporters on a more unconscious level.
Trump has often boasted about how wonderful his daughter, Ivanka, on a number of occasions. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your daughter, in and of itself, but the creepy comments he made in 1997 put a large number of people's skin on the crawl. While on air, he turned to the Miss Teen USA Pageant, or which he was a producer, asked to the current Miss Universe at the time, "Don't you think my daughter is hot? She's hot, right" which led to a series of reactions from the shows hosts and guest ranging from awkward laughter to the straight up statement that he was sick, to which he readily best he says if she wasn't his daughter that he would be dating her to referring to her as having a 'great ass'. In a 2003 interview on the Howard Stern show, he goes on at great lengths to describe how beautiful she is. He went on to say his then-22-year-old daughter as, "My daughter, Ivanka. she's six feet tall, she's got the best body. she made a lot of money as a model - a tremendous amount." and asked Stern's audience, "You know who's one of the great beauties of the world, according to everbody? And I helped create her. Ivanka." Misplaced paternal pride aside, he really left no room for doubt about his ideas of his daughter when he dropped the gem in 2015 in a Rolling Stone interview where he said, "Yeah, she's really something, and what a beauty, that one. If I weren't happily married and, ya know, her father . . ."
This wasn't some offhand comment that happened to get caught on tape whilst talking about 'grabbing them by the pussy', this was in a formal interview with a major media publication. I'm not sure whether that means he's really secure in his creepiness, or just blatantly unaware you should probably not publicly declare your lust for your own child. The following year, he announced his candidacy, so this should have been fresh in voter's minds. So I don't want to say that Trump voters are hateful bigots who'd fuck their own daughters but... *gestures broadly to Trump talking about how he'd date Ivanka if she wasn't his daughter.*
