Raw Trailer Review

by Phillip Wilcox "Our Movie Demon"

Cannibalism, eroticism, body horror. disturbing images. Anytime you have a film that contains all of these things, it's an attention getter. It will grab a hold of you and refuse to let you go. That seems to be what we have here in Raw from new comer writer/director Julia Ducournau. I've heard this film described as a "coming of age drama". To which I reply with - HEH? I mean I could see that in a way, judging by what I saw in the trailer. But it's not like it's Richard Linklater's Boyhood, which is a great film in its own right. However, watching this Red Band Trailer, I got the same vibe from it as I did watching Richard Bates Jr.'s bloody affair, Excision, Which is about a teenage girl, an outsider of sorts who goes through a dark transformation as her curiosity and appetite for the erotic and the grotesque begins to overtake her. There is a parallel here where it is dealing with the same sort of subject matter in which it is about a young student who is also vegetarian, by the name of Justine, played by Garance Marillier. She attends vet school and undergoes a carnivorous hazing ritual that leaves her craving meat, Raw meat to be specific. Which then seems to turn cannibalistic.

In a trailer that is beautifully and spectacularly cut together, there are no words uttered in it. No lines of dialogue spoken in it. I'm sure there is dialogue in the film itself, but the trailer is put together in a way that tells a little tale through a collection of images, most being of the cringe worthy and hypnotic kind. I have no doubt what so ever that that is what we are in for. I love watching reaction videos on Youtube for trailers, and just the trailer alone left people freaking out, darting back in their chairs, their eyes bugging out wide with shock and disbelief. So if just the Red Band Trailer alone is having that kind of effect on people, I know for a fact we will be in for some kind of wild ride during the actual film. One shot in particular that is so strong and is in this trailer is that of what looks like the character Justine lying back on the floor, her pants are off, her legs are open and there kneeling before her is what seems to be a friend holding a pair of scissors ready to do some cutting.

First of all - Holy shit and what the fuck! That totally gave me some flashbacks to Lars von Trier's Antichrist where genital mutilation is a strong presence in the film. I'm not sure what's happening in this one scene of Raw, but there's no way I can pass up on finding out what lead to that moment and what will happen afterwards! Because there is a lot of exceptionally strong and beautiful imagery going on, it makes it that much more intriguing and makes me want to see the whole film! It's like slowly passing a what you know will be a gruesome car accident but something inside you wants to see it, even though you're thinking maybe you shouldn't, that's part of the human condition. But there's something else about this trailer that I know will be a huge part of the film, and that is the fact that you have a character who starts out on one end of the spectrum being a vegetarian, and then finds herself on the completely other end of that spectrum eating raw meat and even delving into cannibalism. There's something truly profound and primal about that. With all this said, I have read and heard that this film has already hitting people hard at film festivals, making people faint, throwing up, leaving the theater. Not since 1974's The Exorcist has a film had that kind of visceral reaction and impact on audiences. Of course I have no way of knowing if this is all conjecture for publicity reasons, but if it's not and it's real - Wow! What a feature debut, and Bravo to Julia Ducournau!

Raw gets a USA theatrical release for March 10th, 2017! So keep an eye out for it!
