DCP:

You're a world renowned accomplished magician as well as a filmmaker - At what point, which came first for you in your life? Which did you want to do or be?

Steven Spade:

I have been doing magic a since I was a young boy, my uncle was a magician so had an interest since then ,so definitely the magic came first, but saying that I have loved watching movies just as long. I'm huge horror fan. Even could say a horror nerd ha ha. But that definitely came later in my mid teens.

DCP:

Have you ever confronted a skeptic? What was that experience like?

SS:

As the saying goes "theres always one". Meeting people that are skeptical about magic happens a lot but I enjoy the challenge of making them a "believer" and them questioning their own reality, or even not believing what they are seeing.

DCP:

Are there any lessons you've learned from either performing magic or filmmaking that you've applied to one of the other?

SS:

Always bring them down the garden path, and when they think they know what the plot is its time to take a U turn and push them into the unknown. THIS IS SOMETHING I USE IN FILM MAKING AND MAGIC !!

DCP:

Who or what inspires you not just as a magician, but as a filmmaker?

SS:

My inspiration comes from many places for my magic and films. Old quotes, books, black & white films, even poems. But just taking time out to sit and write while on the road with shows, tours, research, urban myths and legends.

DCP:

What are some films that have impacted you the most in your life? And what about those has made such an impact?

SS:

This is a very tough question! I am a crazy movie buff and there are hundreds of films I could name, but as a kid I use to watch lots of old horrors with my dad who to this day is still a bigger horror fan than me. Hitchcock and Hammer Horror on Sunday evenings, great childhood. Movies that have made an impact on my life. Saw IT as a kid and it truly terrified me. Big Bond fan too and classic Bond Sean Connery Gold Finger. HUGE John Carpenter and Scorsese fan - Definitely a mixed bag here.

DCP:

You also perform for private parties of A-List celebrities - What has been the craziest experience you've had thus far?

SS:

There's been lots of crazy stories that have happened over the year. Not many I can share though. But this is one that sticks out in my mind. I was hired once for a private party at a film festival and when I got there I found out it was for Hollywood A-Lister Kevin Spacey. I walked into the room and started to doing some close-up magic, I was in the middle of a card trick with Mr. Spacey and his guest, when i notice his watch and using some slight of hand and misdirection i stole his watch off his wrist... i will never forget his face i finished the card trick, and said "I have a gift for you ". And as he looked up he saw me holding his watch. We laughed and joked about the price of his watch, and later when the party was finished he came over and showed me and some guests a card trick that he knew and even played the piano in the VIP area. It was definitely a pinch yourself moment.

DCP:

What is one thing about yourself that people would be shocked to know about you?

SS:

Hmmmm. I play the guitar; I use to teach it and was in a few small bands. I was also professionally vocally trained as a teenager in classical music and opera. Not my proudest moment (thanks mom haha).

DCP:

Can you tell us about any projects or shows that may be coming up in the future for you?

SS:

I'm in talks at the moment with a stunt team and a TV network about my next Escape Stunt! I can't say much about it but I can tell you it will be a Houdini style Escape in the next few months! And Spade Lion Productions IS going stronger than ever with an amazing new crew of some of the most creative people I have ever met! This year we will be producing two live theatre stage shows, and I start work in producing our first feature film "I SIN" it's a horror film with a twist that we are very excited about!
